Mining & drilling applications
Diamond core drill crowns
Fused W₂C grit (40/60 or 60/80 mesh) brazed with diamond stones in copper-silver or bronze matrix — standard construction for mineral exploration and geotechnical core drilling.
PDC drill bit bodies
Fused tungsten carbide infiltrated with copper alloy binder to form the near-net-shape PDC cutter pocket body — provides hardness and abrasion resistance to anchor PDC cutters under drilling torque.
Hard-facing overlays on drill collars
WC grit welded into hard-facing rod applied to drill pipe tool joints, stabilizers, and drill collars — protects against casing wear and abrasion during rotary drilling.
Mining & road planing picks
WC powder in Co-bonded cemented carbide tip inserts brazed onto drum picks for longwall coal mining machines, continuous miners, and road surface planers.
Rotary percussive drill bits
Medium and coarse WC grades in Co matrix for button inserts in top-hammer and DTH drill bits used in open-pit mining and quarrying.
Geotechnical & construction coring
W₂C grit matrix bits for concrete, masonry, and foundation coring. Grit size matched to aggregate hardness and required penetration rate.
Technical questions
What mesh size is standard for mineral exploration core drilling?
40/60 ASTM mesh (250–425 µm) is the most common for HQ and NQ core drill crowns. 30/40 mesh is used for larger diameter or deep-hole drilling where longer bit life is prioritised over penetration rate. We supply all four standard mesh sizes to order.
What is the difference between fused and sintered tungsten carbide?
Fused tungsten carbide (W₂C) is produced by arc-fusion of tungsten and carbon, cast and crushed to grit fractions. It has very high hardness (~3000 HV) but lower toughness than sintered WC-Co, and is used in brazed matrix applications such as drill crowns and hard-facing — not pressed-and-sintered cutting tools.
Can you supply fused W₂C as cast rod for infiltration brazing?
Yes. We supply fused tungsten carbide as both crushed grit and as cast rod for infiltration brazing of PDC bit bodies. Specify the diameter and length when enquiring.
Is your WC powder suitable for thermal spray coatings?
WC powder (sintered, not fused grit) is the standard HVOF and plasma thermal spray feedstock. We supply WC powder in appropriate particle size ranges for thermal spray applications. Share your spray system parameters and coating specification for grade confirmation.
