WC powder grades for cemented carbide
| Grade | F.S.S.S. (µm) | App. density (g/cc) | Typical cemented carbide application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultra-fine | 2.5 µm | 2.4 g/cc | Indexable cutting inserts, PCB micro-drills, solid carbide end mills |
| Fine | 5.0 µm | 3.2 g/cc | General-purpose inserts, solid carbide drills, drawing dies |
| Medium | 10.0 µm | 4.8 g/cc | Mining drill buttons, road planing picks, wear parts |

Cemented carbide applications
Indexable cutting inserts
WC-Co grades for ISO K, P, and M turning, milling, and boring inserts. Fine grades deliver the hardness-toughness balance required for cutting tool substrates.
Solid carbide end mills & drills
Sub-micron and fine WC grades pressed and sintered to near-theoretical density for solid carbide rotary tools used in aerospace and precision machining.
Mining drill buttons & inserts
Medium and coarse grades for rock-drilling button bits, roof-bolting bits, and percussion inserts where impact toughness is critical.
Wire & rod drawing dies
Fine WC-Co grades for diamond wire drawing, rod drawing, and tube forming dies — requiring consistent hardness and low porosity in the sintered blank.
Wear parts & nozzles
WC powder for blast nozzles, valve seats, pump plungers, and wear liners. Coarser grades used where shock resistance is needed alongside wear protection.
Road milling & construction picks
Coarse WC grades in Co or Ni matrix for road milling machine picks, foundation drilling, and tunnel boring machine cutters.
Technical questions
What total carbon spec is required for cemented carbide WC powder?
Our WC powder carries Total C ≥ 6.11% (bonded) and Free C ≤ 0.03%. The stoichiometric total carbon for WC is 6.13%; our specification is designed to match the requirements of WC-Co sintering without free carbon contamination of the binder phase.
Which F.S.S.S. grade suits ISO K, P, and M cutting inserts?
ISO K (cast iron) grades typically use 0.8–2 µm WC; ISO P (steel) and M (mixed) grades use 1–4 µm. Our 2.5 µm fine grade covers most standard insert compositions. Custom Fisher targets can be agreed to order.
Can you supply pre-blended WC-Co ready for pressing?
We supply WC powder and cobalt powder separately. Pre-blended WC-Co can be discussed for larger standing orders — share your Co%, grain size target, and monthly volume for a feasibility discussion.
What is the typical impurity profile?
Key impurities (Fe, Mo, Cu, Na, Co, Ca, Mg, Mn, Zn) are documented on the certificate of analysis with maximum limits per lot. Contact us for a sample CoA matching your incoming inspection criteria.
